hi it's been a real long time since the last entry... all thanks to school. haha. oh well or rather not-so-efficient time mgmt. But seriously this first design project of third year (yeah that's how time flies and how old we're growing) has been one of the most intensive so far. It's group work again... somewhat like the pavilion cept that it counts for more. Year 3 aki is quite different, with the design studios divided into 3 cores - technology, urban and environmental studies. there are 3 projects the whole year and each project will be in each different core. I really thank God that I got into a tech studio for P1 hehe cos i don't like tech the most and P1 is the lightest proj since it's the shortest and its grp work. hehe. at least got pple to figure it out with u. which we did but erm haha let's just say hopefully it worked relatively ok.
So the last 5 weeks of my life since sch started has been spent on this proj. 1st week was precedent case studies and research. then it was on to site analysis and the real design. basically it was a really short and rushed thing. the brief was to design a retreat for urbanites in a Shenton way site. My group did a teahouse retreat thingy which we conceived as treehouses linked by a trail. the upside of this? u probably would nv be able to do something like this in real practice. and its kinda fun in some way when u imagine how it'll turn out. the downside? heartpain, brain drain, sleep-less nites and a sleepless nite. and lotsa work. we had to make a model 1:50 twice the size of what everyone else was doing. cos my tutor said so. but it does make sense i guess since we were working with specific trees and we had to model them as close to real as possible so a smaller scale wd not have been useful. but it also meant we had to do much more work and spend much more money on material. and unfortunately for the rest of our other studiomates... it meant we occupied lots more space and generated lotsa rubbish. Much apologies =) our model took 3 tables to rest on... its so big we cant bring it out of the door so during submission they had to come over to 'chop' in cos it cdn't go thru the door of the room. and yeah my studio looked like a huge rubbish dump. haha actually the entire year 3 studio looked like that i pity the poor cleaners. aint worth being a cleaner in aki.
it was such an intensive proj i had to stay over 2 consecutive nites and the last time i did that was like 2 years ago for the zoo model (argh so swiftly time flies) and basically cutting wood was the general pastime. ooh haha there was this cute time at 4am one nite where we decided to start papier macheing our site (haha the latest trend in site model?) so we had this container with starch inside and all 4 of us trooped to the water cooler with blurry eyes to pour the hot water into the starch. but it didnt work. so we proceeded to tiff to chk out papier mache mtds on the net. and it required boiling water. so there. quite hilarious trying to cook starch in the wee hrs of the morn. aki pple lead quirky lives so those of u who arent aki pple and are our friends pls try to be more understanding. thanks =) oh anyhow the whole proj turned out not bad. quite talked abt too. haha big is beautiful i must say. hmm mb i'll post some pics up. and many thanks to my gro members mel esp for being the rock of this proj, austen and cy. It wasnt always easy working in a grp cos we all naturally have diff ideas and mtds and stuff but thank God it was not too bad in the end. and we have quite a beautiful model. and sections. and trees hehe. and come to think of it it's been 5 years since i've been in the same class as mel argh that means it's been 5 years since i left MG sigh.
submission was on monday and final crit was yest. it was ok thank God haha i think my crit panel's not bad they're relatively informal and stuff and all prob old enough to be our parents haha. so yeah. and once again all the crits are on the same day - like in year one - so we cd all go out for dinner across studios once again! sad thing was studio 1 is kinda down by 1/2 cos the rest are on exchange. and cos my present studio is not the on type so we didnt have studio dinner. but jo's studio had so in the end, me, ahmad and banzhang joined her studio... basically the whole urban core actually. but when we got there -spizza at holland - it was actually more like a whole grp of aki pple frm across studios. so it was quite fun actually. hehe got to sit opp a korean exchange girl so i got to ask my burning question abt this korean drama i've been attempting to squeeze in between the wood-cutting & wire-twisting sessions hehe. so thank God for that even small stuff like that He arranges for hehe i've so touched =) yups Italin pizza is always good so yeah =)
the bad thing abt this sem is that so many pple are away on exchange. i do miss the days of studio1 or ONEstudio as we now style ourselves =) cos near;y half of us are gone on exchange. the effects were most obviously felt when sch 1st opened. wah it was so boring and slow. plus we have very few common mods this sem for aki so we seldom see each other if we were'nt in the same studio. but i guess when things got busy... there's no time to feel bored.
anyhow this weekend is a short reprieve b4 tropical aki wkshop next week which is gonna be fun but lotsa work i think. something along the lines of vert studio. gotta treasure these sorta stuff b4 we embark on the serious projs. i wonder if there are such stuff in the upper years. oh well i gtg now. haha to watch my korean dram - my lovely sam soon (somewhat like bridget jones only less vulgar =) and then its time to pay back the sleep debt C=
