building blocks of architecture

hi i've just emerged from one of the most harrowing weeks ever... thank God. Aki is a life in contrasts. one most u're ultra busy and the next u're nearly totally free (u'll feel this most at hols) okok now it's like not exactly free cos it's like the buffer time (to do stuff) before next onslaught comes in a fortnite after the sem break. well well...

ok so last week was particularly crazy mostly cos i have tutorials all on odd weeks and only 1 on even weeks (this week) plus design which is always everpresent and neverending. i felt the stress the week b4 last when me & lw were discussing our urban design presentation where we had to present on a spatial pattern in 2 districts in singapore. so in the end after much discussion (after which i became the stressed one argh) we decided on holland drive and some new block of flats in clementi. went there on sunday... hmm somehow holland is like my frequent hanging out place for work and play nowadays? ok since JC i guess but more so now.

then the week began in earnest... monday had studio (which meant sunday nite was spent on design) after studio there was suppoed to be viz lec but my grp had to interview an architect for the aki construction module so we went for that and i must say that for a guy ernest has horribly bad directions and memory abt places and in particular a place where he worked for a month. poor jo burnt up more petrol than was needed as we went ard in circles in a place that obviously wasnt the correct place (even a girl like me can tell u that) the best was when we finally found the building and someone said turn in next door we were like no! the correct one is next door. and best part was that someone forgot which floor it was on... ooh lala i cant believe it... believe me i wasnt pissed off jus amazed that a guy has such bad directions and memory of places. thank God for zx who was a normal guy with decent directions. haha actually it was quite hilarious haha oh well hmm i must say that the visit to the architect was the most relaxing and interesting thing all week. there's something abt gg out at nite/evening to a not so crowded place to do visits like that ... reminded me of the time we went for the site visit at kent ridge park last sem then dinner at harbourfront... it's like some surreal quality la with yr akimates someplace at nite doing work where dinner is like the recreation haha like those nites in clementi after studio or 1326... i rather like these times =)

then we went back to sch after dinner which was abt 9 plus and me, sarah and ernest were to stay over in studio to revit out the massing model of our site... and i learned how to do one thing - reviting lollipop type trees dun laugh ok it took us some time to find out and I was the one who found out how to revit out a sphere! haha dun laugh all u non-aki pple... learning a software while having to use it for ur work is not easy k. so me n sarah shared a cab bk at 3 when we were done and it was sleep till supposedly 7plus (cos ernest decided that our aki construction grp had to meet at 930am to do the presentation for tutorial on wed) in the end i woke up at 9 which was ok cos it started ard 10 plus haha as expected aki pple are not morning pple ... we r 24hrs pple haha no la... nites are the most productive working hrs... so after that it was lecs till 6 then it was time for me and lw to do our urban design ppt presentation for tutorial also on wed.

ok so last bus back again then i fell asleep and then woke up ard 2? i think and did sommore of the ppt and up at like 6,7 cos lec was at 9... after that we did the ppt again then it was off to 2 rounds of tutorials - urban design followed by aki construction which thank God again went not too badly. and when u think u can sleep properly... there's studio on thurs which meant wed nite was like jus a coupla of winks sigh...

then thurs was studio after which i had a proper nite's sleep for the 1st time the whole week thank you Lord for that and that i didn't have 2221 presentation on fri. poor lw she had it oh man. so fri was relatively slack i had 2 tutorials in the morn (jus the show face type to listen to other pple present) oh yeah for builiding we had to do a water sys survey on some bldg and my gro chose ACJC cos it's near nus and cos of my connections... well i regretted not sending the letter rite after cny... it was agonising waiting that few days b4 fri tut for the reply it was like Hallelujah! praise the Lord! when i got the reply on wed =) phew hmm but in the end we migh not go so sad cos i think they dun seem to have the plans we need... now we're in limbo looking for other alternatives... so fri was like the little breath b4 the xiong stuff started again. i went to holland v again after class for lunch with the MG gals - esther, min, ser... wooh it's amazing how God arranges stuff... jo was gg there too so i got a lift! hehe thank God for that =) food of choice was crystal jade xiao long bao (it's like the default whether with aki or non-aki pple) but i'm not complaining man *huge grinz* after i got free frm the reg lamen+xiao long bao combo & discovered the other variations of the dumpling & the non-lamian staples the last time was there with lee, ger, esther it was heavenly... ooh i loooove all their dumplings okok i dun really fancy the one in chilli oil most of my friends love but all the other baos they have are ooh lala plus it's healthier than say nydc & cheaper too =) after that and all the talk i went to town with ser & esther (aww so sad i'm not gonna see them till nov) went shopping alone in orchard cos they went to beach rd... bought a cute jacket from Fox that says "stanford grad" haha ok they had a 40% off sale but like so few pple were there not bad huh found a gem in the most unexpected of places =) thank God.

after that it was back to serious stuff. all cos of design interim crit on monday! revit became the companion over the wkend & generated lotsa corny msn nicks hehe zy was best - just rev it - in the spirit of nike haha and his irrevitable and revitalised... mine was like rev it up! haha so chessy hmm at aki construction tutorial i came up with this pun that resulted in a cacophony of laughter, once again establishing my expertise in this arena (okok i must be humble cos it's God who gave this ability to me thank You! ) the TA asked us to come up with a word to describe the bldg we're doing & they were all like petrina! think of somethg! err so while i was racking my brain to come up with a good one fast while the other grps gave theirs amzingly God brought to mind somethg that i thought of a few days b4 - brickthrough! haha cos the bldg's special feature was the old rustic brick la... they all shouted in amazement after i said it haha =) yup thank You God for jogging that mem of mine =) cos i was thinking of brick for my own design... it sseems like brick is everywhere ... in my design precedent study, in aki construction, in urb design (holland flats were brick)... hmm i hope to see a breakthrough soon! =)

ok so sat nite and sun afternoon all thru to mond was spent on the computer revitting away... imust say that doing in studio is good cos we learn frm each other n when one person makes a discovery all will know... but the thing is doing at home also frees u from worrying abt certain stuff... like we all at studio were have probelms exporting frm revit to photoshop but those at home didnt - the trick? export to ppt it's so clear!

oh well interim was ok i guess cos the other tutor was real nice oh man - i mean he pointed out all yr mistakes but he does it very nicely WITHOUT sarcasm & colourful statements haha actually my tutor is like that too and i really thank God for that for putting me in this studio =) He's always real good abt this & everyelse for that matter =) ok but i know my presentation layout wasnt good ahhh all thanks to my presumption that the site was too big to be exported clearlay and when i found the jpeg today i seriously regretted my stupidiy yesterday... oh well live & learn i guess. so in the end, my intention is clear (the concept that is) but doesnt translate in the aki so sad sigh... i have to see her during the break next sem & i was pretty sad abt it cos it meant that i wasnt that good but well i'll take it as a good thing i can see her 1 more time & that she's so helpful yeah... so hopefully it'll all end well =)

oh anything is this interim i actually listened properly to my studiomates' crit and actually formed some critical opinions abt the designs which is good cos it means i'm devleoping a critical eye for aki which all ties in with the realising the area i hope to do in future... aki journalism, criticism along those lines... i think i have a real sensitivity to aki & beauty in design it's like i can really dissect these things & all... usually my analysis is better than my design. u know what aki can get me real excited, in a way lit & even hist can't so yeah wow i always thank God for leading me here & away frm journalism... i never regret it =) it alleviates the toughness of the course ,seriously. also this sem i feel that i've finally learnt how to design (though this sounds odd but yeah it's that) my tutor doesnt say a lot but what she says is real helpful & smthg i can relate to... i used to design without direction... without a proper concept but now it's so much clearer... next up to express it in the aki =)

so now this week is a particularly free week i still am amazed by it but nvtheless thank God for it :) tmr is SDE day which hopefully is gonna be interesting haha an openhouse of sorts plus other stuff. ok so i hope this means i can post more often with shorter posts (sorry serene for this one) oh and happy Valentine's to all those who have the privilege of celebrating it (those of us who dun u;'re not alone =) good nite folks! =)

P.S. btw i'm planning to start a "column" of sorts featuring architecture acc to themes each month or so... to intro to non-aki pple in a fun way & for the reading pleasure of the aki ones (erm the few that managed to find this blog out ha) and for me to learn =) so enjoy it's under construction for now (pun intended =)
