Hi! i haven't posted for some time... the last month was the busiest and perhaps toughest time of the sem once again. So much has taken place... for clarity sake i shall divide them into 4 weeks -
1) Production Week
2)Submission and Crit Week
3) Reading & essay Week
4) Exam Week
1) Production Week
It starts around one week before submission - the most painful week :) Argh first u gotta pray that yr tutor will confirm yr design and most imptantly, not suddenly make u change major stuff cos that will mean less time to produce. After that it's all production and no design. Drawing, colouring, cutting, gluing and pasting. And bleary eyes, bruised 2nd finger on the right hand (due to prolonged gripping of the penknife) , occassional nicks and unhealthy food and the general isolation from civilisation. oh the price to pay for our passion! And there's the constant checking of 'the market'... everybody is trying to up their quality and of cos there's always the spoil mkt ones (and i dun mean it's a bad thing... it improves the gen quality and gives us something to wow abt :) haha yes i like beautiful things :) zh's wood contours was one of those... everyone who walked into the open studio were like what so ex! but actually its costs the same as if u use cork shts! only issue is that u need tons of strength (and time) to cut it. of cos kf's model is amazing as usual... with the columns actually penetrating thru the acrylic sht.
this time i decided to use pen and colour pencil... hehe was actually quite happy with the results... finally panels that i can be proud of :) of cos it aint perfect but well it's a good improvement for someone whose forte aint in drawing. 1st time i enjoyed the drawing as much as the model making :) so i really thank God for that and the best thing was that i managed to finish more or less what i wanted to do on time... after previous traumatic experiences of not doing so... thank you God :) for seeing me thru.
2) Submission and Crit Week
So after submission it was off to munchie's... the 1st time we din go home str after submission cos this time it was at 2 instead of 5. after that i went home to sleep... started at 6 - told my mum i wanted to watch proj runway at 10 but in the end i only woke up the next morn at 7 plus- haha din even eat dinner. Oh well the sleep debt from days of subsisting on 4/5 hrs sleep and none the nite b4 submission. was quite an interesting week... the last week of sch b4 the exams and reading pd. on tues i went shopping with lw and jo ... haha the weird part is aki pple feel the most free b4 exams while the others are like crazily mugging already. that's cos with submission and crit we feel like this huge burden has been lifted frm our shoulders. then on thurs we all went for the design forum by toyo ito - who's the famous architect who designed vivocity. it was like some pop concert... even if u rsvp it's no use cos it was like this mad squeeze into the audi and thank God most of my studio 1 pple got seats... quite a few had to sit on the flr. And our brilliant qb - as usual - was a finalist in the vivosity student design contest. haha his wide-open mouth was so unglam when the emcee announced that he was in the semifinals (actually he knew long ago it's jus tt he din expect them to announce it then) of cos the talk was pretty interesting... it's not like everyday a famous architect comes to S'pore.
the whole week i attempted to write the 2 essays due the following week but progress was pretty slow- argh looking bk i shd hav been more diligent abt it. And Sat was the day of the crit. And it was fraught with the most nasty comments u cd ever hear (mind u, it wasn't even sarcastic, jus plain nasty... at least in yr1 it was funny AND nasty which somewhat alleviates the pain i suppose? ok thank God they were ok towards me... but poor mandy. the receiving end of the most perverted comments ever (pardon the pun - those who were there will understd this) and our crit - predictably- ended the last and even the afternoon one - which was to have started 1 hr aft we ended - had already started b4 we ended so lunch was like at 3. what's new?
3) Reading and essay week
Ok with the end of the final crit... we turn our attention to our other modules - which otherwise were more of less neglected the rest of the sem (as usual so why do we still have to take them?) haha ok i wont be bitchy, i actually enjoy some of them :) reading week is like study week. the sad part was b4 i cd actually get down to studying, first i had to hand in my portfolio on mond, and churn out 2 usp essays due that week. first time i printed panels... ohh they were so nice hehe peace centre is the lastest to be added to the aki list of hangouts (how sad haha) after mond, it was time to write thoe essays, painful as they may be. it's kinda strage that while writing was and i guess is still one of my fortes, it's like i've lost the passion for it - at least academic kinda writing. it means like hours of tapping away at the lappie and thinking of crafting the best words to convey yr ideas. but once's it's done its :) like woosh! one down one more to go hehe. and i really thank God for studio 1 yr 1 sem 1 ! u guys are wonderful! our study grp system was amazing... esp for a mod thta was kinda messy with reading that req u to fig out where they meet the notes. so we split up the job n came up with great notes! hehe thank God for taking care of us if not i really dun know how i can find the time to study for 2722 with all the essays. plus 2722 was open bk so the notes were pretty useful. hehe thank God for my good memory too :) still can study last min :)
the worst part of the week was when i went bk to sch on fri to collect the 'weigh a ton, cost a bomb' portfolio. the bus ride there was amazing fast and smooth i didn;t have to wait much for both buses thank God :) my mistake was that i dallied a lil after taking my model and portfolio. when i went to get a cab there were like 3 pple in front of me. then they were gone. by then it was clear that it was diff to get a cab (cos the other pple got it by booking) then it started to rain and i tried calling to book but guess what? it was engaged. then the nearly 2 hr long ordeal began. there were nearly no avail cabs, and it was raining, and the cab lines were engaged (when u finalyy get thru, u have to wait sometime b4 they get to u and when they did, i was told there were no cabs answering to my call) it like one of the most horrible experiences i had. finally after almost a harrowing 2 hrs later, i managed to book a cab. felt so truimphant BUT i shd have been more patient and trusted God cos b4 my cab came, another lady managed to get a cab! i seriously regretted not waiting. hai so i had to pay an extra 4 bucks... plus there was some jam so the final bill was more than twice what i'll usually pay. oh man, it was God teaching me a lesson abt patience and waiting for His perfect timing :) and abt procrastination. yup but man it was a real painful experience... nearly cried then.
4) Exam week
Then finally the exam week. 2722 was on mond 9am. i woke real early ard 6 plus. it was a rainy day and at that time traffic is slow. so in the end i was like 5-10 mins late for my exam, the 1st time ever i've been late for any exam and i intend to make it the last. i only i had listened to my mun's advice to take 96 instead of 151 i cd hav been on time ... oh the price of disobedience! but thank God for His grace and mercy ... i mangaged to finish the paper b4 time :) yup that's how good He is =) then after that i had like 4 and a half days to study for BU which was so timely cos i've no idea what happened in BU after lec 5 - b4 u say tsk tsk, pls know that it is the same for the general aki population, only the building pple have the time to go for the lecs :) so it was like phyics in Greek at first but thank God for the wisdom and understanding :) it was quite painful since the mod was building structures - or rather a more hideous form of physics haha. i find it so ironic and i still do... that i really disliked physics back in mg - was free from it in jc - and guess what? i'm still stuck with it now! square one haha. it still boggles my mind how this all came to be so. the girl who treated the science subj like Chi - jus memorise, esp when u dun understand - is majoring in something both arts and science based. Oh how amazing are God's plans for us ! :) yup but i never regret coming to aki, painful as it might be sometimes. the thought of deisgn jus stirs my blood within :) hehe
so after days of calculating shear stresses (how apt) and bending forces etc it was Sat. (i wonder why they declare that it's a 5-day work week and all the offices in nus r closed on sat BUT i have my crit & an exam on SATURDAYS? someone mind explaining the discrepancy?) this time i was early - ultra early. hai but i took too long to do the truss question and so in the end i couldnt finish the paper. hmm oh well i do my best, God does the rest so i'll jus have to leave it in His hands. then the few pple who finished and others went to town but since i decided to go to CG i din go with them. must put God 1st :) so i went to arts to get my usp essay n it was quite intersting - nv went to that part b4 and i really pity the poor arts pple... the buildings are so many n kinda confusing and in arts u gotta rush frm one class to another man it must be confusing. in aki there's jus so few places u go all with a small area. and occasionally to arts/sci/usp dep on what cross fac stuff u take. so yeah... b4 i ramble on... i must say it's been one crazy sem but a real fun one as well - thanks to pavilion- but as usuall the wya admin things are done ard here leaves much to be desired.
ok haha this empirical approach of disecting the past few weeks of my life is probably the result of dabbling with physics and the scientific part of aki somewaht excessively the past weeks :) haha ok gtg now... it finally the hols! 3 sems done, 7 more to go!
good nite folks! :)
